About the Artist

Paris Bordone (1500 Treviso-1571 Venice) is a typical representative of the late Renaissance in Venice. He is known to have lived in the city from 1518. He was probably trained by Titian, who remained a great influence on him throughout his creative life. Giorgione and Lorenzo Lotto were also sources of inspiration for him. Bordone soon became known as a portrait painter and received many commissions at home and from abroad. He was employed by the wealthy Fugger family in Augsburg in 1540, and worked for the French court in 1559. In addition to portraits, he also painted religious and mythological paintings, altarpieces and frescoes. His works include Portrait of Nikolaus Korbler, 1532, Sammlung Furst von Liechtenstein, Vaduz; Portrait of Hieronymus Krofft, 1540, Musee du Louvre, Paris; and Bathsheba at Her Bath, c.1544, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne.
