About the Artist

Lucas Van Leyden (1494 Leiden-1533 Leiden) first studied his trade with his father, the painter Hugo Jacobsz., and after 1508 with Cornelis Engelbrechtsz. in Leiden (also spelled Leyden). In June 1521 he went to Antwerp, where he met Albrecht Durer, who drew a portrait of him. Six years later, Lucas van Leyden traveled to Zeeland, Flanders, and Brabant. In Middelburg he met Jan Gossaert. Although there is no documentary evidence that he traveled to Italy, he did spread Italian, as well as Netherlandish and German, influence through his pictures. Van Leyden numbers among the most widely influential artists of his time, having created a few large altarpieces, many small format devotional pictures, portraits and genre scenes, as well as a comprehensive graphic oeuvre. Major works by the artist include Virgin and Child with Mary Magdalene and a Patron, 1422, Alte Pinakothek, Munich; The Last Judgement, c. 1526, Stedelijk Museum "De Lakenhal," Leiden; and Moses Striking Water out of the Rock, 1527, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
