About the Artist

Carlo Crivelli (c.1433 Venice- c.1495 Ascoli?), also known as Donatino Creti, and brother of the Renaissance painter Vittorio Crivelli, was active in his hometown, from which he was exiled for criminal activity. He went to Zra in Dalmatia, and then moved to Massa Fermana and finally settled in Ascoli in 1469. His artistic development was influenced by artists in the circle of Franceso Squarcione in Padua and by the early works of Adrea Mantegna, as well as later by the School of Ferrarra and above all Cosme Tura. With his conservative approach he remained an exponent of the Venetian tradition. Typical of Crivelli' painting is a penchant for ornamentation and ostentation, as well as a tendency toward precision. Works by the artist include Polyptych, 1473, Duomo, Ascoli; Virgin and Child with Saints, 1482, Pinacoteca di Brera, M<ilan; and The Annunciation, 1486, The National Gallery, London.
